Residents of Gitaru in Kikuyu on Tuesday rushed to siphon unrefined cooking oil after a truck overturned along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
According to Kikuyu deputy police commander Evan Mosee, the truck was transporting unrefined oil from Mombasa to Uganda when one of its tyres burst, resulting in the truck overturning.
Residents were seen with jerricans, scooping the oil after the accident.
"This morning, we received blessings after the truck overturned. We are thankful that no life was lost or anybody was injured. We are grateful for the free cooking oil," one of the residents said.
Another resident said she had collected about 10 jerrycans, each containing 20 litres of oil.
However, Mosee warned the residents against using the oil, emphasizing that the oil was not ready for human consumption.
"This oil is unrefined, I plead with residents not to use the oil because it can cause health complications," Mosee said.
Mosee advised those who had already used the unrefined oil to seek medical attention.
