The ministry of agriculture has assured farmers that they will work together and support each other so as to boost the country's food production.

Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi told farmers that the government will work closely with them from the grassroots level to counter the challenges they meet during food production.

Linturi said that farmers in the country can produce enough food for the country as well as for storage and for sale if their challenges are addressed.

The CS said that the government will assist them to add value to their food products so as to boost their nutritional value.

He said value addition also helps farmers get markets for their food products in many places including outside the country.

"When you have enough food, which is nutritious, the country will have healthy people," he said.

"Happiness of a farmer is to earn a profit after selling foods that are of the best quality. When food products are added value, getting a market is easy. We shall have wealthy farmers and people who are healthy."

He spoke at Kenya National Farmers Federation's (KENAFF) 76th annual general meeting in the Kikuyu constituency in Kiambu county on Saturday.

Linturi said the William Ruto-led government aims at supporting all farmers to make a profit by reducing the cost of crop production.

"We want to see a situation where our farmers have made a profit from their sales. We aim at reducing the cost of farming inputs so as to reduce the cost of production and farming as a whole" he said.

He was accompanied by KENAFF management which urged the government to support farmers since the country depends on what is grown in the country.

CEO Dr Mwenda M'Mailutha said the country's agriculture sector will be transformed when farmers will be empowered by the government.

M'Mailutha said this country is made up of many farmers, saying once they are enlightened about better farming including agribusiness, many people will venture into farming adding that hunger will not affect this country whenever draught seasons come.

"We want to see a situation of this country having enough food even during the drought. We do not want to see a situation where people die of hunger, starve and even eat anything they come across even if they are not edible" he said.

KENAFF chairman Kaburu M’Ribu asked the government to research indigenous seeds.

He urged the government to involve them while distributing subsidised fertilisers or any other thing meant for farmers so that they know each other.
