The body of a senior police officer was found hanging in his bathroom in Juja, Kiambu, in a suspected suicide.
Police said they were called and informed that inspector Wilson Mugambi Gitonga of Mitunguu police station in Meru had died by suicide.
When they reached his house they found him hanging in the bathroom.
The officer had a pending case of assault and was declared a deserter since December 2021.
Police who attended the scene said they were yet to establish the motive of the incident. The body was moved to the mortuary.
Elsewhere in Nairobi, a man died after he jumped off the Globe Cinema overpass.
Witnesses said the man had climbed the wall of the overpass and clang there for a few seconds before he leaped down almost 20 metres and died on the spot.
The body was moved to the mortuary.
Police say they record at least two cases of suicide in the country which is a worrying trend.
Police handled 499 cases in 2019 and 575 in 2020. At least 313 people are reported to have taken their lives between January and July 2021.
The police are yet to release data for this year which they say is alarming.
To address the menace, authorities have been pushing for campaigns on mental wellness in the police service, which is among the most hit.
As part of efforts to address the trend, police authorities have launched counselling services.
The counselling unit will, among other things, evaluate, design and lead an outreach programme that helps prevent mental health and substance abuse.
Further, it will assist clients and families affected by mental health, substance abuse and trauma with ways of overcoming the problem. Ends
