Police in the Limuru subcounty has launched investigations into the brutal murder of a 68-year-old hawker at Kwambira market on Wednesday.

The body of Agnes Wanene was found with several stab wounds and left in a corridor of a hotel at the shopping centre.

Wanene's body was discovered by people passing by at dawn. 

Her family said they suspect she was in danger after her phone went off, which was not common.

“Her mobile phone has always been on, but it went off and she could not be reached," George Ngure, her brother said.

Businesses at the centre came to a standstill, as residents watches in dismay the body of the woman, who used to hawk tea leaves and vegetables.

"Insecurity is rising after it had decreased in this market. Now we have cases of mugging and robbery by gangs armed with knives and toy pistols,” Jane Wacheke, a fruit vendor said.

Another resident Joram Njenga said nowadays people forced to close their businesses early because of the rising insecurity. 

“The criminals will even call you by name as they rob you,” Njenga said.

Wacheke described Wanene as a humorous, humble and aggressive hawker, who respected everybody.

Wanene’s brother Moses Kibe asked the police to conduct a speedy probe and bring the killers to book.

“We were shocked by the news but all we want to know is who are killers and what was their motive,” Kibe said.

County police commander Perminus Muchangi said they have laid strategies to deal with cases of insecurity.

Muchangi urged residents to continue working with the police by sharing crucial security information to secure the area.

The body to was taken to Uphome mortuary, where an autopsy will be conducted as investigations continue.
