Residents of Ndeiya subcounty in Kiambu are up in arms over the silent return of alcoholism among young and middle-aged people.

They suspect even high school students are into hard drugs such as smoking of bhang.

They have asked the government to intervene and save the young people.

Voice of Men and Children Network Bishop James Njenga said since schools have closed, there is a likelihood that the number of alcoholics might rise.

"If alcoholism menace is not adequately addressed, there might be family breakups and rise in school drop-outs and poverty. These are some of the issues that shapes a society," Njenga said.

The cleric also asked Kiambu county commissioner Wilson Wanyanga to investigate 10 homes in the area where  illicit brews are prepared.

He alleges that liquor is transported to the market in Ngong, Kawangware, Maai Mahiu and other areas using motorcycles.

"This is very serious. We have a problem that need urgent attention. We have ten homes which are in the radius of about 2km apart where these liquor are being brewed," he said.

Limuru police commander Eilen Mola however said they have not heard about the cases, but they would investigate.

Another resident, Beth Njeri, appealed to Interior CS Fred Matiang'i to intervene and assist them to control illicit brews in the area.

"These are the drinks which makes men to lose their ability to satisfy their wives," she said.
