The Mastercard Foundation has partnered with Purity Elderly Care Foundation to conduct a Covid-19 public awareness campaign.

Pecafo is a Kenyan NGO that advocates and champions the rights and concerns of the elderly, especially the neglected.

The foundation’s CEO Wanjiku Kairu said the campaign will be targeting the entire Kieni West subcounty.

Kairu said on Friday they will engage the services of local community health volunteers and public health officers in the campaign that will run for the next two months.

She added that the elderly are the worst hit by the disease as most of them have underlying illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and cancer, among others.

Wanjiku said they started the campaign after the economy was opened which has seen people move a lot and work late at night.

“People have relaxed after the lifting of the curfew but we should not relax because the disease is still there,” she said.

Wanjiku said the campaign will involve advising the people to get the vaccinated and follow Covid-19 protocols set by the government.

The organisation has been advising the elderly to stay at home and avoid  congested areas so that they can keep safe.

“And I think we have been safe but keeping warm has been the main issue we talked about during the cold season," she said.

"We were advising the families to keep the elderly warm to prevent them from getting diseases like pneumonia.”

She said they will be distributing hats, lesos, and face masks with the awareness messages and soap in a bid to stop the spread of Covid-19.

The campaign started on the November 1 and will run up to the end of December.
