Tetu parliamentary seat aspirant Geoffrey Wandeto has decried the low turnout of people registering as voters in the constituency.

The one-month mass voter registration drive ends on Tuesday.

Wandeto said the youth have given the exercise a wide berth and that by Sunday, only 1,031 had registered in the constituency out of the targeted 6,000.

He called on residents to turn up in large numbers before the exercise comes to a close.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission officials in Nyeri have in the past said that most of the youth in the county are reluctant to register as voters as they wait for incentives from politicians.

Wandeto also urged residents to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

“I call on the youth to go for the Covid-19 vaccine to ensure that they are protected from the disease now that President Uhuru Kenyatta has fully opened the economy,” he said.

He spoke on Sunday at Wamagana Stadium during the finals of the Geoffrey Wandeto Tetu Rising Tournament.

Forty-one teams participated in men’s football, six in women's football and 50 in men’s volleyball. The winning teams took home various cash prizes.

During the tournament, the youth were urged to register as voters, as well as to go for the Covid-19 vaccine.

Several youths went for the vaccine, which was being administered near the stadium, while others registered as voters.

The games started in August and ended on Sunday. Wandeto said the aim of the tournament was to bring youth together in the war on drug abuse and other social ills.

“Going forward, I will organise more sporting activities to scout for talent with the aim of forming a constituency team that will be representing Tetu in the county league,” he said.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Tetu was known for producing the best volleyball players, who played for several companies in the country.
