Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Mbugua has urged Kenyans to join the Kenya National Police Deposit Taking Sacco.
He said on Wednesday this would help them boost their economic prosperity. Mbugua said the Sacco’s membership is not limited to police officers and their families. All Kenyans are welcome to join and save with it, he said.
He described it as one of the best performing Saccos in the country, adding that police officers constitute 95 per cent of its membership is police officers.
Mbugua said those who join the Sacco enjoy high dividends, flexible loans and financial literacy training, among other benefits.
He spoke while commissioning a dispensary constructed by the Sacco at a cost of Sh28 million at GSU Recce camp in Kimbo, Juja.
“I am among the pioneer members of the Sacco and I can attest that I have made significant strides financially. Even you, members of the fourth estate, as well as all Kenyans, should join the Sacco for the sake of financial growth and economic prosperity,” Mbugua said.
He was accompanied by GSU Commandant Douglas Mbugua and Sacco chairman David Mategwa, among other officers.
Mbugua said the sacco has touched many lives through corporate social responsibility, citing the newly built dispensary that will not only serve police officers but also the Juja community.
“The Sacco has initiated so many life-changing programmes and projects in the health and education sector. The other day the Sacco constructed nine classrooms and a fully equipped computer lab at Utumishi Girls High School in Gilgil,” he said.
Mategwa echoed the sentiments. He said they have 3,000 members and total assets amounting to Sh42 billion projected to reach Sh50 billion by next year.
“We are seeking to have more members joining us as we celebrate 50 years of service next year. We usually train our members in financial literacy to make sure they make wise financial decisions that will bring them more fortunes and economic stability,” Mategwa said.
“We sponsor education for children of our departed members. So far we have 70 beneficiaries of the programme and this year only some 15 bright students joined Form 1 through our programme.”
At the same time, DIG Mbugua said the government is set to put up a 100-bed level 3 hospital at the Kimbo GSU camp to serve officers and Juja residents.
He said plans are at an advanced stage and construction works would begin soon.
Mbugua called on the Kiambu government to assist in deploying medics, equipment and medical supplies.
“We will engage the Kiambu county government to help us in staffing the facility and stocking drugs so that we can serve our officers and the community diligently,” he said.
