Night transportation of livestock has been banned in Nyandarua to eradicate theft of cows, sheep, and goats.

County commissioner Boaz Cherotich on Wednesday said transportation of slaughtered livestock has also been banned. Meat slaughtered in Nyandarua is often transported to neighbouring counties including Nairobi at night.

Cherotich said the theft was on the rise.

He spoke to reporters in his office during a briefing on measures being taken to protect farmers from the thieves.

Seven dairy cows and tens of goats have been stolen in the last two months, he said.

Those transporting livestock must have movement permits from the ministry and a letter from the chief of the location of origin.

He said they had agreed with the county government that meat inspection will not be done at night because it encouraged theft and was often carried out illegally.

Police have been instructed to be vigilant and mount roadblocks to apprehend culprits who were “on the rampage”.

The administrator praised residents for their cooperation with police saying they had shared important information that led to the recovery of stolen animals.

“Only yesterday (Tuesday), drama ensued in Milangine when livestock thieves were cornered by villagers. They abandoned their vehicle and three goats," Cherotich said.

The thieves dropped one of the goats from the boot of their car amid hot pursuit from motorcycle riders. The move was aimed at distracting the chasers.

The thieves eventually abandoned the vehicle and the other two goats and disappeared into a thicket.

Initially, thieves slaughtered the stolen animals in the bushes but "are lately carrying live animals in lorries and cars."

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i last week told residents the government will eradicate livestock theft.

Speaking at NYS Tumaini barracks in Ol Kalou on February 15, Matiang’i said they will not allow farmers to be reduced to paupers. He directed police to do all it takes to end the menace.
