A Nyeri court has ordered that the public inquest into the death of the third Nyeri governor Wahome Gakuru starts afresh.

The order was issued by Nyeri chief magistrate Wendy Kagendo.

Kagendo issued the order after Amana Africa Organisation applied to be allowed to cross-examine state witnesses.

Amana entered into the case today (Thursday) when the matter came up for mention.

Gakuru was a member of the organisation.

The inquest had grounded for about a month due to the absence of magistrate Maisy Chesang’ who is in police custody and facing charges over the death of her husband Robert Chesang.

Starting of the inquest afresh was also supported by senior assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Peter Mairanyi.

“After we adjourned in the previous hearings, I got information on which I would like to examine the witnesses,” Mairanyi said.

Three witnesses had already testified.

They are former governor’s personal assistant Josphat Mwangi Maina and two body guards, Corporal Peter Mwaniki Maigua and Corporal Samson Lekol.

Lawyer Kaari Kimathi for the late governor’s parents and siblings also did not oppose the move.

In her orders, Kagendo also directed that the inquest be conducted for seven days. The dates were fixed as June 25, 27 and 28 and July 2, 4, 9 and 11.

Gakuru died in a road accident at Kabati along the Thika – Murang’a  Road while heading to Nairobi on November 7, 2017.
