Nyandarua county has allocated Sh5 million to aid more than 10,000 people at risk of starvation in the drought.

Governor Francis Kimemia on Wednesday evening said available data demands urgent intervention to save the lives of people and livestock.

“We will ensure this situation does not recur. I appeal to the national government and other stakeholders to support the victims," Kimemia said.

He said all wards are affected at various levels.

The governor spoke after a joint cabinet and disaster management committee meeting to assess the drought.

Most of the affected areas contain the most vulnerable members of society. They are former colonial villages, squatter villages, IDP settlements and areas with integrated IDPs.

These include Karamton, Uruku and Suguroi in Ndaragwa; and Kaimbaga in Ol Kalou, Lereshwa in Kipipiri and Githabai in Kinangop.

The county will provide food to all colonial villages and children's homes.

Water will be provided to schools and health facilities as a short term measure. The county will swiftly sink boreholes, desilt dams and build water pans.

Livestock will be immunised and subsidised fodder will be made available.

The county aims at a long-term plan to overcome dependence on rain-fed agriculture and ensure food security.
