Not everybody should hit the gym in order to cut weight, experts have warned.

One ought to know what the body requires before seeking a work out plan, says Annita Kaburu. She is a gym administrator in Thika town.

The complexity of working out in the gym requires consideration of machines and regimes to adopt, the attire and diet to match the activity, Kaburu says.

She said not people of all ages are fit for the gym.

Those growing up undergo a lot of changes in the body which could mislead one to spend money for work out. She says those in the developing phase experience growing spurts because hormonal levels are disproportionate at the time.

"At such a critical time, tough physical exercises involving heavy machinery, dead lifts and strength training put your growth spurt at risk,” Kaburu says.

She said those skipping meals thinking it will keep them fit were doing more harm to their bodies.

At Kaburu's gym, members pay Sh40,000 annual membership fee with the option of paying Sh23,000 or Sh15,000 for half a year and three months membership charges respectively. Those wishing to register for a month pay Sh6,000.

Adults pay Sh250 for daily workouts with students enjoying a discounted rate of Sh50 daily. "We have additional services like sauna, massage and steam baths," Kaburu says.

John Maina, 72, and regular client at Annita’s gym, said he has low chances of contracting Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and other life style diseases because of regular workouts.

“No matter your age or physical condition, it’s never too late to start exercising and improve your health. I have been working out for the last 12 years and I now feel younger and stronger,”  Maina said.
