‘It’s insulting to call women MPs burdens

and describe Kenyans as tired donkeys’

Kiambu woman representative Anna Nyokabi has criticised Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria over his Punguza Mzigo initiative.

It aims to scrap the positions of woman representatives and senators and reduce the number of counties, MPs and MCAs. The MP told Kuria it is insulting to call women MPs “burdens” and describe Kenyans as “tired donkeys”.

“Women MPs are not a burden to Kenyans and women have benefited immensely from their contribution both inside and outside Parliament. It is wrong to term them a burden,” Nyokabi said.

The MP said the constition states the woman representative position can only be changed after 2018.

Nyokabi spoke in Kuria’s Gatundu South constituency on Tuesday, when she accompanied Labour and East African Affairs CS Phyllis Kandie to launch biometric registration for the cash transfer programme. It will benefit the elderly, orphans and people with disability at the Gatundu Deputy County Commissioner’s office.

The MP criticised Cord leader Raila Odinga for inciting Kenyans and failing to follow the law in calling for the removal of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission members. She accused the former Prime Minister of ineptitude for failing to spur development in Kibera while he was MP. Nyokabi said many Kenyans have no faith in Raila’s capacity to lead the country.

If we must, let’s have fewer thieves

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has defended his Punguza Mzigo referendum initiative, saying it will reduce the burden on the public. He said Kenyans are over-represented by people who spend more time “stealing” from the taxpayer than delivering on their mandates. “If we have to have thieves, let’s have fewer thieves,” Kuria said.
