An American NGO has pledged to support a children’s home in Murang’a county.
The Upendo Children’s Home in Kambirwa, Murang’a East subcounty, has been struggling to support children after founder Eunice Kamotho fell ill. She is the widow of former politician Joseph Kamotho.
Administrator Mary Wambui said she is struggling to accommodate 36 girls due to lack of funds.
She spoke during a visit by members of the Can Do Kids NGO on Friday.
The NGO is based in the state of Illinois.
Wambui said the home now depend on donations to educate the children.
She said 16 are in primary schools and 20 in secondary schools.
“We totally rely on well-wishers who come out to sponsor individual kids and foundations like Equity Bank’s Wings to Fly programme, because our girls are bright,” Wambui said.
She said the home houses girls between eight and 19 years.
Jenniffer Roth, the NGO’s executive director, said they stumbled upon the children’s home on the Internet and got interested.
“We saw an appeal the home had made on the Internet and were deeply touched. We then decided to visit the home to identify its specific needs and work out a way to help them,” she said.
