Wamatangi wants police post in Kedong Ranch

LAND DEALS: President Uhuru Kenyatta is escorted by Senator Kimani Wamatangi in Kiambu on September 4.

Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi wants the government to build a police post at Kedong Ranch to protect Lari residents.

Speaking in Kiambu town yesterday, Wamatangi said landowners want to build homes but members of the Maasai community are threatening them.

“The members are IDPs, yet they own land. What we need is ample security,” he said.

Wamatangi said Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery should ensure a police post is set up as soon as possible.

More than 8,000 people evicted from Kedong Ranch in Mai Mahiu, Naivasha, in 1992 are planning to go back.

However, members of Utheri wa Lari land buying company want security tightened.

Company chairman Stephen Muiru said the Maasai say the land belongs to them.

Muiru said AIC pastor George Gatundu and businessman Peter Kibunja were killed when members were attacked by Maasai youth on January 24.

Muiru spoke on Friday at Kedong when members organised prayers.

He said they bought the land in a legal deal between 1974 and 1984 for Sh32.5 million.

“We started settling from 1985, but we were evicted in 1992. It had been less than 10 years,” Muiru said.

He dismissed claims by Narok and Kajiado leaders that they don’t have legal ownership documents of the 28,000 acres.

The senator yesterday called for peaceful coexistence between the communities.

He said leaders should preach peace.

“These members were evicted illegally by members of another community, yet they have title deeds,” Wamatangi said.
