A water tunnel being built in Murang’a county will not be harmful to the environment, the Athi Water Services Board has said.

Board consultant David Kimingi told the county assembly yesterday the board consulted widely on the Northern Collector Tunnel project.

The project has drawn strong criticism, with residents concerned it may affect water flow in rivers Gikigie, Maragua and Irati.

A county technical committee had called for its stoppage pending a review of its masterplan and design.

The Sh6.1 billion World Bank-funded tunnel seeks to channel water to Ndaka-ini Dam to improve water supply to Nairobi county.

“The project is on course although we are waiting for the funds to be channelled to the Treasury by the World Bank to proceed,” Kimingi said.
