Laikipia North subcounty security committee has banned sand harvesting on a section of land. The land is being disputed by two communities. Assistant commissioner Benedict Nduva said anyone caught harvesting sand will be prosecuted.

The Yiaku community living on Kurikuri Group Ranch in Mukogodo division protested what they alleged was bias from the provincial administration. Led by Lax Manasseh, they staged a protest at the border of the Kurikuri and Makurian group ranches.

He said government officers favour the community from Makurian on sand harvesting. “The land in which the sand is found is at the border of these two group ranches. Both sides are entitled to benefit.

Today , our lorry which had gone to fetch sand was denied access by police officers who had been deployed by the DC while four from the other side were allowed to harvest," Manasseh said. Communities from four group ranches in the Sub County rely on the sand harvesting and selling as their primary source of livelihood.
