Bungoma Women Representative Catherine Wambilinga has urged social media users to make the best use of the platforms.

Wambilinga told users to avoid vulgar language and use the platforms to support those in need, for instance, through funds drive and other charitable deeds.

She said that she is disappointed in most WhatsApp groups in Bungoma where members politic from morning to evening.

“Social media has been used to disrespect elected leaders, church leaders and even security agents by hurling abuses at them which shouldn’t be the case,” she said.

She spoke on Sunday during an end-of-year party held by over 150 members of the Webuye Yetu WhatsApp and Facebook groups.

Others who attended the party were security officers from Webuye police station and Bungoma East Knut secretary general Aggrey Namisi.

The group’s administrators Darvin Katenya and Namisi Cheptai urged community members ensure they do not share unnecessary or vulgar content.

“We have had many scenarios where members engage in an uncouth manner by abusing one another and even sharing nude photos,” Katenya said.

Katenya urged youths to shun tribalism and profiling of people on social media and instead use it for economic empowerment.

Webuye police station John Bibao asked residents on social media to work with security officers in ensuring the community is safe this festive season

“If you have identified anything that is a threat to security please feel free to alert us and we shall move with speed and handle the situation,” he said

Bungoma East Knut secretary general Aggrey Namisi asked the members to know the type of WhatsApp group they are in whether it’s job, school or business to interact better.
