The construction of the Sh60 million Busia cross-border fish trans-shipment market is in its second month, and the contractor expects to finish it within six months.
Busia Cross Border Fish Market Management Unit chairman Francis Akech has thanked the contractor for the good progress on the new market whose completion will contribute to the socio-economic development of Busia town.
The ground floor of the one-storied building will house refrigerators for preserving fresh fish, latrines and changing rooms, while the first floor will have offices, stalls for dried fish and restaurants.
The project, which is funded by the World Bank through the Kenya Devolution Support Programme, is set to benefit Kenyans and nationals of the EAC member states. The old market was flattened before the construction of the new one started.
All the traders were moved to a temporary site at Soko Matope as they continue with their businesses awaiting the completion of the building that will boost cross pace before picking up after her customers became used to the temporary site.
“We moved voluntarily to pave way for the construction of the modern market. We thank the county government for the initiative, which will see us operate in a conducive environment once the construction of the new market is complete,” a trader called Nyalego said.
