Universities have been advised to churn out visionary leaders instead of engaging in negative competition. In a forum for regional universities held last week, the institutions were urged to nurture innovative leaders who can transform Africa and drive its growth. The 6th Inter Region Economic Network Thought Leaders Forum highlighted the need for intellectuals to play a key role in shaping leaders. "Africa invests heavily on literacy type of education and the detriment of skills for critical thinking; problem solving and scientific inquiry,” said Nashon Adero of Taita Taveta University College.

The forum highlighted the failure by African Intellectuals to organise society for selfish gains. “While it has been easy to blame poor political leadership, less attention has been paid to how individual, civil society, corporate and intellectual leadership undermines progress in Africa,” said IREN founding director James Shikwati.
