THE Capital Markets Authority will conduct a study on investor profiles to understand each market segment, acting chief executive Paul Muthaura said yesterday.

Speaking at the launch of the Kabarak University Capital Markets Challenge, Muthaura said profiling will help CMA adopt a more focused and targeted investor education strategy based on scientific data.

“The study will enhance the quality and quantity of information available on capital markets for each market segment. It will also increase avenues and programes for the delivery of investor education and public awareness,” he said.

He said the CMA challenge aims at creating capital markets awareness among students countrywide.

“The authority recognises the youth as the key to Kenya’s economic success. We are committed to broaden the investor base by embracing the youth who form the majority of the country’s population,” he said.

He said that CMA and other financial sector regulators are currently collaborating with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development to come up with a joint financial literacy education curriculum for schools and pre-university institutions.

“The partnership involves carrying out a training needs assessment to establish the status of financial literacy in the country and create financial awareness among the youth,” said Muthaura.

He urged universities to conduct and promote formal teaching programs in financial management subjects by developing capital markets related curriculum for undergraduates.
