A man who broke into a house and stole Sh90,000 in Nairobi has been sentenced to one year in jail or pay Sh100,000 fine.
Harrison Oduor Omongo pleaded guilty before Kibera chief magistrate Ann Mwangi.
According to the charge sheet, Omongo broke into the house of Lydia Njiru on June 14 in South C, Nairobi county, while she was away at work.
Upon returning in the evening, the complainant was shocked to find that her house had been broken into and disorganised.
The prosecution told the court that the complainant later noticed that her Sh90,0000 that she had kept in the house was missing.
She reported the matter to her landlady.
The prosecution said she also reported the matter to Akilla police station, leading to the arrest of the suspect.
"The CCTV footage was reviewed and she identified the suspect as Brayo, a man known to her. The officers who had visited the place arrested him," the court heard.
"I agree I took the money but I ask for forgiveness," the accused said.
The magistrate directed him to pay a fine of Sh100,000 or spend one year in jail.
He has 14 days to appeal.
