The 2023 Golf Park Open champion Sammy Mulama will lead other top golfers at the Mulembe Pro-Am tournament at the par 73 Kitale Golf Club this weekend.

The two-day tournament tees off  today and ends on Saturday at the same venue.

In today's event, the elite amateurs are expected to face off with professionals before the Open tournament tomorrow.

The Mombasa Sports Club member, who is currently training in Kitale, said he will be using the event as part of his build-up ahead of the ongoing Kenya Amateur Golf Championships Series.

“Right now, I am training well in preparation for the tournament on Friday morning. This will be the biggest tournament at the club and I want to play well so that it prepares me for the KAGC series,” said Mulama.

The tournament comes just a week after another KAGC Series event— the Trans Nzoia Open—where national captain John Lejirma emerged victorious after firing a total of 10 under par 209 to win the title.

The Kenya Railways player edged out Kisii’s Geoffrey Karioki and Nandi Bears' Elly Barno, who tied in second on 224. Steve Orinda (Vet Lab) and Golf Park’s Josphat Rono tied in fourth place after posting 225.

Mulama confirmed that some elite amateurs like Josphat Rono, Chris Andreas (Ruiru), Barno, Nandi’s Nelson Koech, and Eldoret's Aron Kitur have confirmed participation.

“The Friday event will be for elite amateurs only because those with handicap 5 and below will be playing,” said Mulama.

He added that professional golfers will be led by Kenya One Dismas Indiza, Eldoret’s Andrew Chelogoi, David Wakhu, and Simon Karanja among others.

“These are just but a few pros set to battle out for the prize. Now that we shall play off scratch, the amateurs and pros are at the same level during the event,” he added.
