On the morning of Monday, April 29, residents of Old Kijabe town and villages within Mai Mahiu were woken up by roaring sounds of raging waters.

Heavy nightlong rains caused water to accumulate in a blocked railway drainage upstream at Kinale before its walls gave way in the wee hours.

The Water Resources Management Authority (Warma) said contrary to popular belief, the water was not from a burst dam but had collected in the tunnel over time forming a catchment area.

With the onset of the heavy rains, the gulley burst, leading to the water to rush downstream, flattening homes and vegetation and leaving behind a trail of death and destruction.

“The damage is deep and devastating. It has also triggered a massive humanitarian crisis akin to what has been witnessed in other parts of our Nation as the enhanced rains leave trails of death, destruction and displacements. Nature's fury is immeasurable,” Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said.

The DP had visited the area to condoled with the bereaved families after intial reports indicated that 45 had died in the tragedy.

The search and rescue mission is still ongoing in the area amid the heavy rains.
