Kenya dominated the East Africa Under 18 and 20 Championships concluded in Zanzibar on Saturday.

Kenya won 23 medals which included 12 gold, five silver and six bronze medals during the two-day championships held at New Amani Complex, according to the team manager James Lagat.

Other countries that participated were Uganda, South Sudan, Djibouti, and Zanzibar.

In the U18 category, Esther Atsenga (100m), Nancy Chepng’etich (400m and 800m), and Evans Kiprono (400m) clinched gold.

In 100m, Atsenga clocked 12.84 to win gold beating Lailat Vuai of Zanzibar to second place. She clocked 13.78 while Tanzania’s Jasmin Tarik finished third in 13.39.

Chepng’etich beat compatriot Rita Mwende to win gold in 400m after crossing the finishing line in 59.99 while Mwende clocked 61.06. Tanzania’s Mwajuma Musa came home third in 62.91.

In 800m, Chepng’etich again beat Mwende to second place and Mwajuma to third place.

Chepng’etich breasted the finishing line in 2:16.15 while Mwende clocked 2:26.54. Mwajuma finished in 2:30.37.

In the 400m, Kiprono beat Dison Osuja of Uganda and Kenya’s Daniel Wasike to gold. Kiprono clocked 49.58 while Osuja clocked 49.61 and Wasike 50.33.

In the U-20 category, Caroline Anyango bagged gold in javelin with a throw of 47.12m. She beat Mwajuma Ali (32.20) of Zanzibar to second place and Rashima Faki (27.49m) to third.

National secondary schools 100m champion Brian Okoth bagged gold in the event. He clocked 10.88 and was followed in second place by Said Hamad of Zanzibar who clocked 11.41 while Faustine Joseph of Tanzania was third in 11.58.

Regional U18 400m champion Samuel Toili clinched gold in the U20 category. He clocked 48.65 beating Fathi Mousa (49.91) of Djibouti to second place and Francis Adilu (50.03) of Uganda to third.

Riooga secondary school student James Gechuki reigned supreme in 800m. He won the race in 1:52.20. Raymond Omara of Uganda settled for silver in 1:54.13 while Abdourazak Hassan of Djibouti won bronze in 1:54.78. Toili came fourth in 1:58.81.

Beatrice Machoka of St Peter’s Keberesi was beaten to silver in 400m. Vicky Anamu of Uganda won gold in 55.93 while Machoka finished in 57.01. Tereza Bernard of Tanzania was third in 59.61.

Felister Chekwenoi of Uganda beat Kenya’s Judith Jemutai to gold in the 1,500m race. Chekwenoi clocked 4:25.56 and Jemutai 4:43.03. South Sudan’s Atith Thalang was third in 4:45.71.
