Three-time world 1,500m champion Faith Kipyegon will run the 5000m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on May 25.

Kipyegon will be returning to the 12-lap event almost a year after she broke the world record over the distance at the Wanda Diamond League in Paris last season.

This will be the first time the two-time Olympic champion will participate this season after withdrawing from the women’s 1500m at the Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen, China last month.

Kipyegon stunned the world and wrote herself indelibly into the athletics history books when she broke three world records in the space of just a month in the Wanda Diamond League in 2023.

She posted the 1500m (3:49.11) triumph in Florence and followed it up with a 5000m (14:05.20) record in Paris. She later wrapped up the season with a mile record  (4:07.64) in Monaco.

The 5000m record, however, lasted for three months before being eclipsed by Gudaf  Tsegay in the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon in September.

She later went on to claim the 1500m Diamond Trophy in Eugene with a meeting record of 3:50.72, crowning a staggering season with her fourth Diamond League title.

Kipyegon will no doubt have her eye on another historic time when she returns to Hayward Field in the 5000m later this month.

She is joined in Oregon by several fellow athletics superstars, including world champions, Olympic champions and reigning Diamond League champions.

The women's 1500m will pit Ethiopia's world silver medallist Diribe Welteji against British star and two-time Diamond League champion Laura Muir.

In the men's 110m hurdles, world champion Grant Holloway of the USA takes on Olympic champion Hansle Parchment of Jamaica, just nine months after Parchment sensationally snatched the Diamond League title away from him in Eugene last year.

Fellow American Daniel Roberts, meanwhile, will fancy his chances of beating both men after starting the season with back-to-back victories in Xiamen and Suzhou.
