Kirinyaga residents have busted suspected four donkey thieves after they were allegedly caught slaughtering the animals.

The suspects had been slaughtering 30 donkeys near River Sagana.

The residents managed to get hold of the four after three other suspects managed to escape.

They had been caught loading meat in two vehicles and one of the vehicles was set on fire by the angry residents.

One of the suspects then alleged that they sold the stolen donkey meat at a popular meat market in Nairobi, this he revealed after threats that he was going to be released to the angry mob if he didn't speak the truth.

"Please don't kill us. We will tell you everything. We sell the donkey meat ata market in Nairobi and pay those who slaughter Sh10,000 after the business ends," one of them revealed.

The villagers said the crime was very serious as a colt was also found among the slaughtered donkeys.

Another villager expressed how he had planned to shoot one of the drivers with a bow and arrow. Luckily, the suspect surrendered before he made the move and shot him.

"We got hold of two suspects first and later captured two more. We are still looking for the remaining three suspects," the villager said.

This comes after months ago two people were arrested and a motor - vehicle impounded as police recovered donkey meat in Lower Yatta, Kitui County.

Eastern regional police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan said the arrests were made during an operation conducted by his officers at a home in Katothya village, Lower Yatta subcounty early Sunday.

The incident was reported to Kwavonza police station as interception of donkey meat and arrests of suspects at 5.00 am.

"It was reported by an administrator that members of the public had sighted a group of unknown people slaughtering donkeys within Katothya village in the homestead of one Wambua Nzioka," Napeiyan told the Star.
