The Kwale government has embarked on the installation of solar-powered streetlights in various parts of the county to step up economic growth and security.

Governor Fatuma Achani said her administration is keen on developing all areas into urban to attract investors and promote business undertakings.

She said the move is aimed at prompting a 24-hour economy where small-scale and medium enterprises will get an opportunity to conduct business freely.

"This initiative is expected to be a game changer to our economy. Every Kwale resident will have an equal opportunity to do business," she said.

The solar-powered street lights will have a 200-meter stretch and will be 25 meters apart.

Achani said the county will no longer be sleepy as the project is focused on igniting live vibrant nights and creating an enabling business environment.

The governor said long-distance traders from Tanzania and Nairobi will be well accommodated in the county as business along the highway shall remain vibrant all night.

She said the streetlights project will improve the area security hence encouraging more business activities.

"There will be no fear of insecurity because nights will be like daytime, very bright thus prolonging working hours," she said.

Achani said the lights will greatly help thwart crime in the region.

She said the project is also a game changer to the transport sector, adding that bodas bodas and matatus will work until late at night.

Achani said the project has already been launched in Mackinnon, Samburu town, Deri, Tiwi, Nyango and will spill to many other areas across the county.

She said her administration is working round the clock to ensure residents have access to all social amenities and services at their doorsteps.

The governor said the street lights project is sustainable as it will help address some of the challenges hindering the progress of the economy and prosperity of residents.

She said the massive development is part of the commitment of her administration to meet the expectations of the electorate.

Achani said the county is looking forward to enhancing service delivery by putting up many beneficial projects to improve the lives of the Kwale people.

The county chief said her administration is also focused on improving the water and health sectors.

She said several mega water projects have been launched in the past weeks to ensure residents have access to clean drinking water.

Achani said the projects are meant to alleviate water shortage and harness drought situations as well as boost agricultural and livelihood activities.

The region has for years been affected by drought that wreaks havoc on crops and livestock.

In Kwale at least over 200,000 residents are currently affected by drought and are depending on relief food for survival.

Achani said in some parts of the region, the water projects have largely helped in alleviating the drought issue.

She said once the other projects are complete, the affected residents will no longer trek for long-distance to search of the crucial commodity.

Achani said the county is also making efforts in improving the health sector by launching important health projects.

She urged residents to take care of the projects and use then to improve lives.
