About 344 victims of floods and landslides have benefited from Murang'a government support.

The beneficiaries are from areas mapped by the county disaster management committee.

They received money and relief food from the Sh23 million emergency kitty.

Governor Irungu Kang’ata said all victims will receive equal support except the ones from Kigumo constituency, who will receive Sh77,000 each.

“Those from Kigumo will receive enhanced support partly because they lost their farms and sources of livelihood and also because their MP has contributed to their support,” he said.

Victims from areas near Murang’a town such as Gaturi were given foodstuff while those from far flung areas were given money.

“It will be unfair to ask somebody from Ithanga in Gatanga or Ruchu in Kandara to carry foodstuff. We would rather give them money to buy food from their shopping centres”.

Each victim received 25 kg of rice, a bail of maize flour, eight kg of wheat flour, five litres of cooking oil, 10 kg of beans, three bar soaps, four kg of sugar, salt and tea leaves.

Heavy rains left a trail of destruction in several parts of the county.

County's disaster response team has urged well-wishers to contribute to the county emergency kitty to support victims.

The team said more than Sh162 million is needed for intervention.

Kang’ata praised Community Health Workers for playing a critical role during the disaster.

The health workers provided care to those who could not travel to hospitals due to rains.

MCAs urged the disaster team to relocate the victims from public primary schools to social halls for learning to go on smoothly.
