National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi has called for the reallocation of funds in the budget to complete the stalled Koru-Soin dam.
The Sh19.8 billion multi-purpose dam is a long-term solution to flooding within the Nyando subcounty.
It also holds the promise of scaling up irrigation and food production in the area.
Wandayi said the continuous problem of floods within the subcounty has now become a shame to the Luo community.
He noted money had been allocated in the budget in the 9th Parliament to implement the project but it was allegedly diverted elsewhere.
The Ugunja legislator alleged that currently, the flooding problem facing the area is a result of willful negligence by the government which must be held accountable.
He was speaking in Nyando Subcounty Masogo area during the burial of Canon Hilkia Muga Adhiambo Lomo.
Lomo was one of the political lieutenants of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
Wandayi noted that the people from the Nyando subcounty are taxpayers like any other Kenyans across the country and deserve to be given the necessary services.
"Therefore, we shall continue to demand that the government should ensure Koru-Soin dam is completed in the shortest time possible," he said.
Currently, more than 5,000 people have been displaced by floods within Kisumu county following heavy rains and backflow of water from Lake Victoria.
Nyando and Kadibo subcounties have been worst hit by the waters leaving behind a trail of destruction.
Recently residents from Nyando subcounty called for a permanent solution to the perennial floods within the area.
Luke Khaemba, a resident from Ahero, called for a permanent solution after their houses flooded.
“Water has gone with everything, we don’t know how things are going to be now. We have children who have not eaten anything from morning to evening and nobody has come to our rescue,” Khaemba said.
Another resident of Kamidumbi area said over and above giving relief food to victims, the flooding problem should be addressed once and for all.
