Nigerian singer Nneka Egbuna performed on Saturday night to a full house at Tree House on Museum Hill. This was Nneka’s first time in Kenya. During her performance she said to the audience, “This is the first time in Kenya and as you can see we are a trio (on stage) but we will give our 100 percent. Give us a chance to get into your heart.”
The show began with performances from Dan ‘Chizi’ Aceda who is known for his hits like Blackberry and Saida. The singer who grew up in the Delta region of Nigeria, and later relocated to Hamburg, thrilled the audience with her brand of activism. She told the crowd, “The song VIP is about the corrupt people, people who preach love and don’t practice it. Vagabonds in power.“
In 2005, she put out her first album, Victim of Truth, followed by No Longer At Ease (2009), which impressed rock star Lenny Kravitz so much that he invited her to be the supporting act on his tour. The tour was followed by an extended stay in Nigeria, where she composed many of the songs on her third album, Soul is Heavy (2011). This album is multi-faceted and “politically conscious”, a potpourri of Reggae, Soul, Afro, R&B and Hip Hop.
