The violence that marred the recent Mashemeji derby clash between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards at Nyayo Stadium was unfortunate.

The match, which was highly anticipated by football fans across the country, descended into chaos, resulting in injuries and wanton destruction of property.

Nyayo Stadium was a worrying sight to behold as anti-riot police lobbed tear gas canisters in the air to disperse unruly crowds hellbent on causing anarchy.

The derby, which brings together the two Kenyan Premier League behemoths, has been known for its intense rivalry and passionate supporters.

However, on this occasion, the rivalry boiled over, with fans resorting to violence to express their emotions both inside and outside the sports facility.

With the escalating chaos, the dangers faced by children who attended the match were multiplied. Unrestrained individuals pushed and shoved, creating an environment that threatened their physical well-being.

Parents had no choice but to step in and shield their children from harm, ensuring they would not be trampled underfoot.

The disheartening incident not only disrupted the sporting event but also tarnished the image of both clubs and the sport as a whole.

As fans, we have a responsibility to demonstrate sportsmanship and respect towards fellow supporters and the opposing team.

It is important to note that such acts of violence are not only detrimental to the sporting environment but are also against the law.

Law enforcement agencies should launch instant investigations into the unfortunate turn of events and take necessary action against all the perpetrators.

It is crucial to send a loud and clear message that such behaviour is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

The violence serves as a reminder of the need to address the underlying factors that drive such behaviour. Efforts should be made to promote responsible fan behaviour, educate supporters about the value of sportsmanship and foster a more inclusive and harmonious sporting environment.

It is natural for fans to express frustration and disappointment when a team fail to achieve the desired result. However, it is wrong for them to resort to acts of lawlessness while venting their spleen.

When fans let their emotions get the best of them, it can lead to destructive behaviour that can have serious consequences.

It is important to maintain a sense of decorum and respect for the rules of the game, as well as the players and officials. Throwing objects onto the field, vandalising property and engaging in violence are not only illegal but also disrespectful to those who participate in the game.

These actions not only disrupt the game but also create a negative atmosphere that can hinder the enjoyment and experience of all parties involved. Fans must remember that sports are meant to be entertaining and uplifting.

It is the players on the field who deserve our respect and admiration, not our frustration and anger. By keeping our behaviour in check, we can foster a positive and inclusive environment for sports enthusiasts.

Additionally, it is important to recognise that the players themselves are not to blame for a loss. They are professionals who have put in countless hours of training and preparation.

It is important to remember that they are human too and are susceptible to mistakes just like any other person.

Instead of engaging in acts of lawlessness, fans should channel their frustration and disappointment in constructive ways, including offering positive feedback to the players and management.

We have a responsibility to show our support and appreciation in a respectful and law-abiding manner.

By doing so, we can create a positive and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone to enjoy the game, including our children.
