Kipkorir eyes Africa Championships after return from injury

Kipkorir has a personal best time of 10.67 in 100m and 21.34 in 200m.

Wilson Kipkorir hopes to compete at the Africa Senior Athletics Championships set for June in Duala, Cameroon, after recovering fully from an injury.

The double Central Rift 100m and 200m champion said he has been missing out on major championships due to one reason or the other, but he is determined to make the Kenya team to Duala. The event is scheduled for June 19-23.

Kipkorir missed out on the Kip Keino Classic, the World Athletics Continental Tour, but said he will start his journey to the continental show during the Uasin Gishu County Championships this weekend.

“I want to try my level best to make the team to the Africa championships. I believe this is my time,” he said. Kipkorir has a personal best time of 10.67 in 100m and 21.34 in 200m. 

“Last month, I missed the South Africa Continental Tour Challenge due to a hamstring injury but I am now fine and ready for the challenge,” he noted.

Kipkorir, who trains at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, will highlight the county championships at the University of Eldoret ahead of the Central Rift meeting before heading for the National Trials later in May.

“My intentions are very clear. I need to prepare well to achieve my targets,” said Kipkorir.

Meanwhile, Baringo County will stage their event at the Poror High School while Nandi County will converge at Eliud Kipchoge Sports Complex.

In Western, the discussions are ongoing to skip counties' events and host a regional show.

AK Western regional secretary Homer Mugalitsi said: “Many of our counties have teams and we are thinking of just having a regional event.”

North Rift County public relations officer, Boniface Tiren, said Elgeyo Marakwet will stage their event at the Lorna Kiplagat Stadium, Trans Nzoia will be at the Ndura Sports Complex and Chewoyet High School will play host to Trans Nzoia show.

Turkana and Samburu will be at Napuu High School and Kenyatta Stadium, Maralal respectively.
