Everyone and their neighbour might be gearing to invade Uganda this weekend but the Ugandans are already here. Last Sunday, the Gallery Watatu in Nairobi opened its doors to the much hyped 'Ugandans are coming' exhibition. The show features five visual artists from Kampala namely Mark Kassi Byamugisha, Ssali Yusuf, Paul “Kaspa” Kasambeko, Anwar Nakibinge and Hassan Mukiibi.
The guest of honour at the show Kitengela Glass Work's Nani Croze who after expressing the loss of Kenya's Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai, gushed in praise of the artists in show declaring Ugandans to be "number one in art in East Africa."
The show began with a moment of silence in honour of the late Adama Diawara. He was the former proprietor of Gallery Watatu and Cote d'Ivoire Counsel General in Kenya who was instrumental in bringing Kenyan and African art to a international audience. The exhibition runs until October 14.
