At least four members of a family were Thursday killed in a car accident near the Tenwek Bridge on the Bomet-Olenguruone road.

Bomet Central subcounty police commander Musa Omar said the four were driving in a saloon car when it was hit by a lorry in the middle of the bridge, plunging it into the river.

He added both vehicles were travelling in the general direction of Silibwet when the accident occurred.

Omar said all of the occupants in the saloon car died as a result of the impact of their car plunging into the deep water.

The area, like many other places, has been experiencing heavy rains and the river was swollen.

Witnesses said after the car plunged into the water, it was moved away by raging floods some 50 meters away before it was stopped by trees along the river.

The driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene and police said they are looking for him to record a statement as part of the probe into the tragedy.

Police and members of the public were able to recover the bodies of three people.

They included a male and two females.

The body of a minor is still missing, police said.

The bodies were moved to a mortuary at Longisa Hospital pending autopsy and investigations into the accident.

The wreckage of the ill-fated car was towed to Bomet police station.

This is the latest such accident to happen in the country amid an ongoing campaign to address the menace.

Fatal accidents have been on the rise amid calls on authorities and other stakeholders to take measures to address the trend.

Statistics by the National Transport and Safety Authority indicate more than 1,300 people have died and tens of others wounded in separate accidents in the past four months alone.
