The Kenya Meteorological Department has said rainfall is expected to continue in several parts of the country in the next seven days.
The department’s forecast for 7-13 May 2024, showed heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Central Highlands, Western Kenya, and the Rift Valley during the first half of the forecast period.
“Rainfall intensities across the country are likely to reduce during the second half of the forecast period,” the department said.
The weatherman said a high average daytime (maximum) temperatures of more than 30 degrees centigrade will be experienced in most parts of the Coast, North-eastern and North-western Kenya
“Average night-time (minimum) temperatures will be low (less than 10 degrees centigrade) over some parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley,” the department added.
The Met Department has warned of continued flooding in low-lying areas, flood plains and in urban areas with poor drainage.
The death toll from flooding and other impacts of the heavy rains that have hit Kenya since March rose to 228 on Sunday.
The Interior Ministry said more than 164 people have been injured while 212,630 have been displaced.
The forecast for the next three months indicates that rainfall is expected over the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, Central and South Rift Valley as well as the Coastal region.
The department said Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County and parts of the Southeastern lowlands are likely to experience rainfall in May and remain generally cool and cloudy with occasional light rains in June and July.
“The rest of the country is expected to receive occasional rainfall in May and remain generally dry in June and July,” the weatherman added.
