Kenyans plying the Tala-Oldonyo-Sabuk road were left stranded after a bridge was submerged by flood waters in Matungulu, Machakos County.

The River Athi Bridge at Oldonyo Sabuk connects Machakos and Kiambu counties remained a no-go-zone following the incident.

Matungulu subcounty police commander Peter Omondi said the road had become impossible following its submergence.

"There are tides in the waters on the route connecting Machakos and Kiambu counties," Omondi told the Star by phone on Thursday.

In the same Oldonyo Sabuk area, a man whose house had been marooned by floods since Wednesday was yet to be rescued by press time.

Omondi said a disaster team on Thursday toured the area, assessed it and decided it could only be accessed by air.

"They went back to Nairobi for logistics arrangements," Omondi said.

The Kenya National Highways Authority also announced the opening of Kamulu-Kangundo (B63) Road hours after closure.

The Authority opened the road on Thursday after it was closed on Wednesday.

KeNHA director general Kung'u Ndungu said the road's opening followed the subsiding of the flood water at Joska, a section of the highway which was earlier fully submerged after the ongoing heavy downpour.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority is pleased to inform the public that the Kamulu - Kangundo (B63) Road is now open," Ndungu stated in a public notice on Thursday.

The Authority, however, appealed to motorists to approach the section with caution since there could be possible flooding due to stormwater upstream of River Athi.

"The Authority is on the ground for minor repairs caused by the water after confirming the structural integrity of the Bridge. We remain committed to ensuring seamless connectivity to facilitate the safe passage of goods and services for economic prosperity," Ndungu stated.

Ndungu stated that at KeNHA, public safety was their priority.
