Landslide reported in Murang'a county

Gatanga residents have been urged to move to higher ground following the landslide.

Residents of Gatanga subcounty in Murang'a have been advised to seek higher and safer ground after a landslide occurred in the area. 

A police report filed at Ndakaini police station indicated that the landslide happened Tuesday.

"A landslide has occurred within the area following the heavy rains. The communities living near this area were advised to move to higher safer grounds," the OB report read in part. 

The bridge connecting the Kimandi-Wanyanga trading centres on the upper side of the dam has been swept away. 

Police said the area chief and the local community have been advised not to use the road for it is life-threatening. 

"During the visit, one family was relocated to a safer area. The area remains calm," the OB said. 

Also affected by floods are Kitengela residents who woke up Wednesday morning to find they are surrounded by water. 

Heavy rainfall pounded the region on Tuesday night. 

Many of them took to social media to call for help even as humanitarian organisations such as the Kenya Red Cross swung into action to evacuate families.

As early as 2 am Wednesday, several residents were unable to move out of their houses because of the flooding situation.

"We are currently on the ground assisting families to move to safety in Kitengela, Kajiado County, following heavy rainfall," the Kenya Red Cross tweeted.

Evacuations were being conducted in households along Deliverance Road, Balozi Road, Baraka Road, Blessed Court, New Valley, Changombe, and KAG area

The latest information from the Kenya Red Cross indicated that six people in critical situations had been rescued.

"Efforts to reach others in this challenging operation continue," the society said.
