National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) chairman Timothy Ndambuki has called on the government to take action against individuals behind the alleged fake fertiliser.

Speaking during in Eldoret on Sunday, Ndambuki said the alleged scam amounts to serious economic sabotage adding that those responsible must be held to account.

"The alleged fertiliser scam is not an issue that can be swept under the carpet. We demand and we will push for prosecution of the culprits,"  Ndambuki said.

He said farmers and the country stand to lose a lot in terms of food security and the government has the duty to protect Kenyans in such situations.

He said the sale of the alleged fake fertiliser is an indicator of moral breakdown among some Kenyans who would go to any length for selfish gains.

"We have serious moral breakdown because this is our country and we must all stand and defend it in all circumstances yet its regrettable that we have those who value immorality," Ndambuki said.

The NCCK boss said even those in government who fail in their roles must take responsibility and quit.

Ndambuki said integrity and accountability must be upheld by all Kenyans and leaders adding that there was need to step up the war on graft in all sectors.

Ndambuki said Kenyans must change their attitude on corruption and be ready to face it head on in order to bestow a morally upright society on future generations.

"In other parts of the world we have leaders and citizens who put their lives on the line to protect their county and as Kenyans we should change our attitudes and safeguard our nation from corruption and other ills," he said.

Speaking on the same issue, Taveta lawmaker Bwire John Okano said MPs had plans to impeach Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi over the alleged fertiliser scam.

Okano said Linturi had failed to act on those sabotaging government efforts to subsidize fertilizer and help farmers increase production.

Bwire and Ndambuki spoke during the Music festival organized by Africa Brotherhood Church held in Uasin Gishu.

The MP said the back stops with Linturi as CS for Agriculture yet he had kept on denying existence of the fertiliser scam.

Ndambuki said the NCCK and churches would continue to check on excesses in society especially in government.

"Kenyans elect the government and leaders to serve them while observing the highest possible level of integrity and we expect nothing less than that," Ndambuki said.

He said those in public offices must take the lead in the war against graft.

Linturi has been on the spot after revelations his ministry, through the National Cereals and Produce Board, distributed fake fertiliser.

After initially denying the report, Linturi finally admitted that 3,000 bags of fertiliser distributed by one of the firms contracted by NCPB to distribute the commodity, were substandard.
