Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna on Thursday left the crowd in stitches at the National Governing Council meeting after he addressed Azimio boss Raila Odinga as 'Mr Speaker'.

The opposition leader is chairing the meeting which is currently taking place at the Bomas of Kenya.

"Mr. Speaker, aah!  Sorry. Honorable party leader, perhaps I should have disclosed that since the last NGC and with your support (Raila) and that of the party, I am now the Senator of Nairobi and I want to thank you," he said.

As the Secretary General of the party, Sifuna was giving updates about the reconstitution of ODM committees and boards when the moment occurred.

"We did enumerate to the delegates the steps that led to the reconstitution of the national elections board and read out the names of the members. Also on reconstitution of the party disciplinary committee, that members of both teams had already been taken through an induction course," he was saying.

The meeting comes ahead of the planned upcoming grassroots elections.

The NGC meeting comes barely two weeks after ODM held a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

Sifuna said the NGC is meeting to endorse the resolution of the NEC.

"This includes revamping the election coordinating committee ahead of our grassroots elections," Sifuna said.

The NGC will among others approve NEC’s decision to disband the National Elections Board following a recommendation of the Central Management Committee (CMC).

NEC had ratified the establishment of the three-member National Elections Coordinating Committee to oversee the devolved polls.

On January 10, CMC also created positions of two coordinators—one male and one female—to oversee the election in the counties.

But NEC expanded the number of coordinators to three to allow for quorum and achieve odd numbers where voting is necessary.

NGC will be required to endorse the changes.

NGC comprises NEC members, the National Secretariat, Party Parliamentary Group, Council of Governors, ODM Women League and ODM Youth League.

Others are National Elections Board, Party County Assembly Group  and Branch Executive Committee  (County).
