At least ten suspects were on Wednesday arrested in an operation prompted after they raided a house, robbed the owners and set it on fire in the Mjambere area in Kisauni Mombasa.

Police said they are looking for more suspects who are linked to a criminal gang operating in the area.

Detectives said they are investigating robbery with violence and arson following the early morning attack.

It is the latest such attack in the area which is linked to criminal gangs, police said.

The suspects had earlier raided a four-roomed Swahili rental house while armed with crude weapons and broke into a shop and stole goods.

Police said the female owner was seriously injured in the drama before being pushed aside.

The gang grabbed valuables and set the shop on fire before escaping.

Residents managed to contain the spread of the fire as police joined in investigations.

A 17-year-old boy was first arrested at the scene of the incident before he led police to the other suspects.

Police said they arrested nine more suspects in the Toa Tugawe area over the attack.

Also recovered from them were four machetes, a television set and other assorted electronic equipment that they stole from the house.

They are expected to face robbery with violence and arson charges, police said.

Mombasa residents have raised alarm over increased attacks by panga-wielding juvenile criminal gangs.

Special police squads have been formed and dispatched to several parts of the Coast to pursue gangs — and those behind them — that have been attacking residents, especially in Mombasa.

Some of the most common gangs include Shiranga, Young Thug, Watalia and Wajukuu wa Bibi, Wakali Wao and Wakali Kwanza among others.

Police investigations have shown the gangs are motivated by politicians' money and inspired by witch doctors who tell them they are invincible as they fan out to terrorise Coast residents.

Other attacks are linked to poverty and misleading religious beliefs, police say.
