In Kisumu, the price of petrol will retail at Sh198.97, diesel will retail at Sh190.59 and Kerosene at Sh188.96.

"In accordance with Section 101(y) of the Petroleum Act 2019 and Legal Notice No.192 of 2022, EPRA_Ke has calculated the maximum retail prices of petroleum products, which will be in force from March 15, 2024, to April 14, 2024.

According to Epra, the prices are inclusive of the 16 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) in line with the provisions of the Finance Act 2023, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2020 and the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020.

Although the official statement did not give reasons for the drop, an insider at Epra linked it to the fair pricing in the current government-to-government oil plan by Gulf firms.

He also attributed the change to the shilling which has strengthened by almost 30 units against the US dollar since early last month.

"Kenya is reaping the double fruits of favourable pricing in the G to G oil plan and appreciating shilling. This is expected to stir economic activities to lower the overall cost of living,'' a source at Epra not authorised to speak to media told the Star in confidence.

President William Ruto had earlier hinted at the reduction of fuel prices.

While addressing Kericho residents on Thursday, Ruto said that Kenyans will receive good news on the prices of fuel when announced.

"I told you to give me a little chance to improve this economy. It had gone to the trench. Now I've removed it from the trenches. The dollar, you can see that it's starting to get better and today it will be announced that fuel matters have started to straighten up because we want to ensure that Kenya moves forward without the risk of debt issues. We must be careful as a nation."

In Epra's announcement for the month of February-March, the prices of petrol, diesel and kerosene were reduced by Sh1.
