A Magistrates court has declined a request by the DCI to hold televangelist David Gakuyo for four days pending further probe into allegations of embezzling Sh1 billion from members of his Ekeza Sacco.
Milimani Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo instead ordered he be detained until Monday at Muthaiga.
"The application partly succeeds on public interest. Since the investigations are at an advanced stage, he be availed on 26 February for plea taking," he said.
He also said since the investigations are at an advanced stage, Gakuyo be availed in court on Monday next week for plea taking.
According to the police, they have been investigating Gakuyo over a case of conspiracy to commit a felony, obtaining money by false pretences, stealing and money laundering involving over Sh1 billion.
The request to have him detained for four days had been objected to by his defense layers led by Ndegwa Njiru and Danstan Omari.
They said the police have been investigating the matter for the last five years and it would beat logic to seek for four days to complete the probe.
As Gakuyo is expected in court on Monday, the police are likely to have him charged in several cases including over 50,000 victims spread all over the countryThe police have also made it know to the court of the public outcry from Gakuyos victims and other affected persons over the funds lost or allegedly stolen by Gakuyo and companies associated with him.
