Two people were shot dead yesterday by gangsters at a village in Maragua. David Wanyoike and his cousin Martin Irungu were killed as they tried to fight off the attackers who wanted to rob a businessman. The businessman, Uticus Mwangi, a former primary school teacher, was accosted by the armed gangsters at the gate of his premises. The son of the businessman was among the two who were killed. Area DC Muktar Ali said Wanyoike was shot in the head and died on the spot while Irungu died on the way to hospital.

A witness said the thugs ambushed the businessman at  the gate of his home. The thugs however escaped before stealing after Mwangi's wife raised the alarm. The two were shot as the thugs escaped. In Kiharu, an 18-year-old girl was found murdered. Linet Nyambura was allegedly gang-raped before she was murdered and her body buried in a swallow grave on Kambirwa-Mirira road.

Witnesses said the girl was last seen  on Saturday evening at the shopping centre. She used to sell bananas at the trading centre. It is suspected she wasabducted on her way home. Area chief Donald Mwangi and the area councilor Catherine Wanjiku condemned the murder. The civic leader decried the increased cases of insecurity in the area and asked the government to curb the rising incidents. She said investigations to the matter should be launched immediately and the culprits arrested and charged.

The Gikindu ward councilor said the area has become insecure for the residents adding so many people have been attacked recently on their way home. In the nearby Mathioya Constituency a man was found murdered and his body bumped in a river. Similarly two weeks ago,a lecturer at Murang’a University College was hacked to death by a 10 man gang.

The tutor, John Kamau Kimani, 48, from Kagaa Village near Kenol town was attacked at his home at about 3:00 am. Following the increased cases Murang’a South District Commissioner has appealed to residents to help police in fighting crime saying a police officer could not be at all places all the time. He said perpetrators of the crime would be apprehended soon and warned locals against hiding criminals in their midst. “Those who murdered the lecturer will be nabbed and must appear in court to answer charges on the crime they committed,” said the DC.
