Becoming Fashionably Inclined
I am blessed with curves. I like to say ‘blessed’ because I’m fed up of whining about my weight all the time. I have always been voluptuous and after having kids my body shape just took on a new form and it’s always been a running battle to have what the world deemed as an acceptable body size. I also avoid fashion shows like the plague because there never is anything that I’d be able to say will look good on me and that I should buy. Last weekend I attended a fashion festival that has actually managed to shift if not completely change my perception.
I have always felt that fashion shows are just meant for skinny women and us curvy lot are destined to just spend our hard earned money on couture off the racks of a clothing chain that mass produces clothes. The Trendz Kenya Fashion Festival was seriously different and that’s why I feel the need to rave about it. Held at the beautiful Tribe Hotel, I decided to buy a ticket and go and see what this was all about. East FM was also partnering in this event and I felt it would be good to see how this endorsement was going on. I’m so glad I went.
The dress code was ‘sensational’ and clearly the only sensational thing in my closet is nothing. I wear down to earth clothing so I was in a bit of a muddle here. I decided to wear a sari and figured I won’t go wrong with Indian attire no matter what the occasion. Traditional seems to work for me when I’m in doubt what to wear. I got to the venue and was ushered in to the poolside where the event was taking place. After getting myself a drink I found a place to sit and waited for the evening to start. They had me from the word go. It started with a designer showcasing footwear and no matter what a woman’s body size is, her foot size is usually consistent and that’s one area of fashion anyone can indulge in without feeling they might be dressed wrong.
The fashion lines that came on the ramp after that were really fantastic and I absolutely adored what Anita Dongre showcased. Anita has dressed most of my favourite Bollywood celebrities and her clothes were a great fusion of East meets West. It does get clichéd at times when people fuse fashions but I must say I was totally in awe of what I saw, and the best thing about the clothes was that this was wearable fashion! Honestly speaking I’m not about to splurge my pay-packet on a piece of clothing that I’d probably only wear once so it was refreshing to see such fabulous and modern attire on the ramp that made the eyes dilate and the palms itch to use the credit card wisely.
I would definitely say this would be a wise investment because of the top notch fabrics used and designs that were not garish at all. Sonu and Sanjeev Sharma are a household name when it comes to organising events that give you your money’s worth. I must say this was the first ever fashion event I attended and actually enjoyed myself thoroughly. And fashion designers remember one thing – just because I wear plus size clothes it doesn’t mean I’m not worthy of wearing your creations.
