Stage set for Zuku Race Day at Ngong tomorrow
This being the second last horse race meeting of the season at the Ngong race course, there is more on offer than just racing. Dubbed, the Zuku Race Day, there will be a lot of entertainment with five major cups being contested for from different distances. There will be two sprint races from 1,200m, two middle mile races and the longest, starting from 2,800m.
The Steward Cup - George Drrew Challenge Series- Presented to the Jockey Club by Mrs Millicent Morson in 1978 is a sprint race worth watching. It is run over 1,200m. There will be five great performers rated between 34 and 40 plus. “Armstrong’s Girl” is the most fancied runner here. Trainer Nuno Nur has “You’re So Vain” another fine sprinter to face “Hoplyte” and “Golden Ash”.
The Nairobi Town Plate - run over 2,060m is a race restricted to amateur lady riders run once every season during July. Punters point out “Rikiti Baby” as the hot favourite. “Tapestry” and “Vidyavann” are the horses to enjoy this trip more easily and will be facing “Freeforall” and “Kijito”. Run over 1,200m the Prince of Wales Trophy is nother sprint race. It has attracted five two year olds. This race is expected to be a two horse race affair between “Labour of Love” and “Sabie Sands” . Their strengths in this compnay leaves the other three to prove their capability
The Louis Cup will be run over 2,800m, the Longest distance of the afternoon. Joseph Muya’s “Hot Desert” will challenge Gill Fraser’s “Cockle Bay” with the Oliver Gray trained “Vuvuzela”expected to make it very difficult for their success. “Rankin”for trainer Karari has proved to be a good sprinter and might find it hard to cope in this company. The Drap d’OR Trophy, run over 1,800m.has attracted the likes of Derby winner “Just Bluffing”. The weight might just play a major role here and “Prophesy” who carries a minimum of 50kg might sparkle. “Woodlands” could steal it is he likes the going.
