Mayor calls for cheaper water

Kisumu Mayor Sam Okello yesterday called for the reduction of connection fee to new user to enhance access to safe water. The mayor said, even though the city boasts of 24-hour water supply, access to safe water is still a problem to most residents especially those who live within the Peri urban centres. The city water supply has been doubled up from 21,000 cubic metres per day to 46,000.

Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company has been campaigning for new connections under a slogan 'Water is back jiconnect'. “This way they will get high returns on water bills as well as reduce the use of water from containers whose hygienic standards cannot be ascertained,” said the Okello. Currently, the Board targets to solve water and sanitation provision problems up to the year 2030 and is still working with AFD in what is termed the Long Term Action Plan (LTAP) for the construction of a new waste water stabilization plant at Otongolo with a capacity of 29,000 cubic metres per day that will serve lower Kisumu.
