Othaya taximan escapes death in carjack ordeal

A taxi driver from Othaya was on Wednesday night attacked, hijacked and dumped in Murang’a. The Othaya Taxi Operators chairman Jackson Kanyi is admitted at the Kiria-ini Mission Hospital after he was stabbed by two robbers. Kanyi said the carjackers posed as clients who wanted to be taken to Murang'a but on reaching Kairo, they turned against him. He said the two grabbed him and one, who was armed with a knife, attacked him.
They told him that they had been paid Sh1 million to kill him and asked him to counter the offer if he wanted them to spare his life. Kanyi said the thugs robbed him of money and his mobile phone. A doctor at the hospital, Timothy Jumbi, said Kanyi was in critical condition with stab wounds on his chest and face. One suspect has since been arrested in Murang’a . Nyeri South police boss Adiel Nyange said they are investigating the matter. Kanyi's vehicle was recovered over 20km from Kairo. The taxi operators in town have since threatened to demonstrate over increased insecurity.
