Former world number 11 Guerrant happy with Sadili

The East Africa Junior Safari tennis Cchampionships went a notch higher with the arrival of former world number 11 Ann Guerrant yesterday. And after watching yesterday’s quartefinals matches at the SadiliOval, Guerrant was full of praise for the junior players, mainly from the East Africa region. “What I have seen are some very talented beautiful players who are hitting the ball with great technique,” said Guerrant.

Guerrant played tennis on the pro tour for 9 years including Wimbledon and US Open. Her record includes wins over Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King. During yesterday’s quarter final, Richard Ooko beat Ugandan John Lutanya 4-6, 6-0, 15-13 in the Under-18 competition to storm into today’s semis while Jamine Luvembe beat Robert Kasombo 6-1 and 6-3. In the girls under 18 quarter finals, Lornah Bwenje beat Tanzania’s Melisa Brown 6-3, 7-6.

Chizi Mutsumi beat Evelyne Ngoli in straight sets of 6-2, 6-0 to make this morning’s semis. In the under-16 competition, Amon Muinde cruised past Wycliff Okenye in sets of 6-0,6-3 to book his place in the semis. Aseyigah Henry of Uganda also strolled through the quarters with a 6-6, 7-5 victory over Kenyan opponent David Mukhwana. Ronex Otieno and Sylvester Juma won their under-14 category matches to book a date into today’s semis. Otieno beat Charles Ochieng 6-0, 6-1 while Juma beat Austrian Sebastian Szapary 6-2, 6-1.
