Spanish National Day Celebrated in Nairobi

Friday, October 14, 2011 - 00:00 -- BY JAMES MURUA

The lawns of the Spanish ambassador's
residence in Lake view in Nairobi were full of guests chatting on the
cool Wednesday afternoon. They were sourced from the private sector,
civil society, government with a large contingent from the Kenyan
diplomatic community. They were all here to celebrate the Spanish national day, which recounts the day
in 1492 that a Spanish expedition composed of three caravels led by
Christopher Columbus, reached the shores of the American continent.
This day changed the world as Europe came in contact with a new
world.

The afternoon was slow to start as the
planned guest of honour for the day Foreign Minister Moses
Wetangula
could not make it and sent in an apology. The host of afternoon was
Spanish ambassador to Kenya Javier Herrera who in a speech
remembered the achievement of the exhibitions. “Spain, as a member of the European Union, has
supported all the progress done by Kenya since the multi-party system
was established in this country, and most singularly since the
approval of the 2010 Constitution which, no doubt, will become a
milestone in the political evolution of Kenya," he said. Away from speeches, guests in the well
attended ceremony relaxed as they feasted on paella and listed to
Spanish music.
